An Assessment of the Global Soybean Industry: An Application of Stochastic Equilibrium Displacement Model AgEcon
Costa, Rafael F.; Xia, Yan; Rosson, C. Parr, III.
This study uses stochastic equilibrium displacement model (SEDM) to investigate the impact on the soybean and its joint products (soymeal and soyoil) sectors of different countries and regions from transportation cost reduction in Brazil incorporating assumptions of decrease in the U.S. loan deficiency payment.

Analyzing the Impact of Changes in Trade and Domestic Policies: The Case of the Soybean Complex AgEcon
Costa, Rafael F.; Xia, Yan; Susanto, Dwi; Rosson, C. Parr, III; Adcock, Flynn J..
This study analyzes the impacts of domestic and trade policy changes on the soybean complex using a Stochastic Equilibrium Displacement Model (SEDM). Three different policies, Loan Deficiency Payments (LDP), transportation costs and export taxes are considered in the analysis. The results indicate that Brazil benefits from a reduction in transportation costs and becomes more competitive in the global soybean market. Brazilian exports of soybeans increase due to relatively lower export prices. However, Brazil gains little improvement in the export competitiveness of the soybean joint products, soybean meal and oil. A lower U.S. LDP rate results in the loss of competitiveness for the United States in the world soybean market. Furthermore, the results show...

Estimating the impact of transport efficiency on trade costs: Evidence from Chinese agricultural traders AgEcon
Li, Zhigang; Yu, Xiaohua; Zeng, Yinchu.
Using a unique survey data on agricultural traders in China in 2004, this study provides direct evidence on significance of interregional transport costs and their key determinants. Our major findings are as follows: (1) the trade barriers within China are dominated by transport-related costs but not artificial barriers, approximated by tolls and fines; (2) Labor and fuels costs are the most significant component of transport costs; (3) road quality is very important for transportation efficiency. Our results indicate that if increasing transport speed by 1 km per hour now, the fuel costs and total direct transportation costs for Chinese traders would reduce by 1.3% and 0.7% respectively.

Strategies for Developing Domestic and International Markets for Nicaragua's Dairy Products AgEcon
Dobson, William D..
This paper analyzes the capacity of Nicaragua's dairy industry to expand domestic dairy product sales and exports profitably. The paper (a) presents information on traits of Nicaragua's dairy industry that influence domestic and export market expansion capabilities, and (b) benchmarks Nicaragua's dairy industry against principles that have been discovered to have relevant, profitable applications in the dairy industries of other countries for expanding domestic sales and exports. Six strategies for expanding Nicaragua's domestic dairy product sales and dairy exports are specified in the paper.
